Student teams from Frisco ISD elementary schools took four of the top five places in the Lone Star Challenge (LSC), a statewide academic competition for students in Grades 4-6.

The team from Borchardt Elementary finished second overall, with students from Anderson, Riddle and Isbell elementary schools coming in next at third, fourth and fifth.

Teams from Ashley, Sparks and McSpedden elementary schools rounded out Frisco ISD’s dominance of the Top 10, with seven of the Top 10 teams from FISD schools.

Lone Star Challenge is a learning experience designed to test students’ knowledge in reading, writing, social studies, math and science. Questions are based on materials developed by Texas Academic Decathlon and are intended to compliment the STAAR testing program.

Students took curriculum-based exams at their home schools this spring before participating in a District-wide super quiz event. Scores were then compared to teams from participating districts across the state.

The theme of year’s competition was Explorers, Pirates, and Privateers, and questions focused on topics such as the age of exploration, astronomy, constellations, navigational instruments, fantasy literature and the novel Hook’s Revenge by Heidi Schultz.
