Newly-elected Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton rallied his supporters at a packed Marriott in Plano on Tuesday night as election results rolled in across the state and nationwide with upset victories by Republicans.
Paxton told the big crowd: “Tonight Texans made it clear they are ready to continue the fight against President Obama and his administration’s power grab. Voters were given two very different choices for the future of Texas: a state that cozies up to Obama, or one that relentlessly defends against Washington’s out-of-touch policies. Their voices resonated in ballot boxes from El Paso to Texarkana and McAllen to Amarillo. Republican candidates across the ticket were chosen to lead by the citizens of this great state. I am honored to be selected as Texas’ next Attorney General.”
Paxton, who has risen quickly recently from State Representative to State Senator, will take Greg Abbott’s position as Texas Attorney General. Abbott won the Governor’s race over Wendy Davis, who went from national rock star status to runner-up. Davis ran a negative campaign from the start and turned up the heat in the final week.
“Thank you Texas for electing me Governor,” Abbott said. “With honor and dignity I will fight for you and your future. God Bless Texas.”
The Marriott at Legacy Town Center was packed with local dignitaries … District Attorney Greg Willis … Congressman Sam Johnson … State Sen. Scott Turner … State Rep. Scott Sanford … Commissioner Chris Hill … the Collin County Lincoln Society … and so on …
Collin County’s County Judge Keith Self won his seat again, telling voters: “Thank you, every one who voted for me during early voting or today, Election Day. Even though I had no opponent, I appreciate your vote to return me for a third term as your County Judge. I work for you, and will continue to provide transparency to county business in this new term. Thank you.”
Congressman Sam Johnson won too, saying: “What a distinct honor and true blessing to serve the great patriots of the Third Congressional District. I want to thank everyone for their belief in me and for their vote. It’s humbling and I vow to continue to fight for you.
Johnson said,”Ronald Reagan rekindled the faith in our nation with a profoundly simple phrase that seems especially appropriate for 2014: ‘Let’s make America great again.’
“With God’s providence and blessing, we will. God bless you and God bless America,” Rep. Johnson said.
Before voting started on Tuesday in the State Senate election, Van Taylor said Texans had a choice to make: “We can either continue to promote liberty and the limited government, pro-growth policies that have made Texas the leader in jobs and opportunity, or we can allow liberals to convince us to turn the way of California and New York. Today is our last chance to take a stand and make sure we keep Texas red, and I am asking that you stand with me for conservative leadership.”
Taylor captured his state senate race.
Newly-elected State Representative Matt Shaheen (District 66) has been busy taking on the Mayor of Houston.
Shaheen, who was a county commissioner, said: “Texans were shocked to learn that a group of Houston pastors were subpoenaed by Houston Mayor Annise Parker to turn over sermons and other church communications. … Over the past few days, I have talked with religious freedom organizations and legal counsel and have decided to introduce legislation during next session, that will impose criminal sanctions against city council members who subpoena religious leaders in a similar manner to that of the Houston Mayor. If found guilty, the elected official could serve time in jail, pay a fine and be removed from office.
Shaheen said, “I am also calling for the resignation of Houston Mayor Annise Parker. Her shameful actions were an abuse of power, trying to silence citizens who oppose her extreme views. This type of attitude in a public official is a threat to the freedoms of all Texans and it follows a troubling pattern by liberal politicians who want to impose their extreme views by abusing the power of government. This will not be tolerated in Texas.”
