A jury has found 36-year-old Brian Mann guilty of attempting to murder his estranged wife, 25-year-old Hannah Pettey, after she testified against him during his trial. The case revolves around Mann’s attempt to poison Pettey using lead, which came from a construction project at his chiropractic business.
Pettey’s courageous testimony helped reveal a web of manipulation, deception, and attempted murder, with her husband’s disturbing actions coming to light as the trial unfolded.
The Poisoning Attempt
Hannah Pettey’s testimony described a harrowing ordeal that began in August 2021 when she began suffering severe physical symptoms. These included back and abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea, and weight loss. Mann, a chiropractor, convinced her that the multivitamins he was giving her from his office would help, even as her condition worsened.
Pettey eventually lost 40 pounds over several months and was eventually hospitalized. Her condition had become so dire that she began experiencing hallucinations.
During this time, Mann appeared unusually caring, bringing her “vitamins and water” and being “probably the nicest he’d been throughout our marriage,” Pettey testified. However, his concern seemed to be more focused on the life insurance policies he had taken out on her, rather than her health.
Pettey revealed that Mann had signed her up for numerous insurance policies, each worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, after she became ill. She claimed that he even discouraged her from going to the hospital, instead manipulating her into staying isolated from her family.
The Insurance Policies and Investigation
Pettey’s testimony also shed light on the many life insurance policies Mann had taken out in her name. These policies were suspiciously signed after she became ill, and Mann was reportedly more focused on them than on her health. He even went so far as to have her wear ankle weights to cover up the weight she had lost when being weighed by doctors.
As Mann continued to pursue additional policies on Pettey’s life, agents began to grow suspicious. Chris Humphreys, an insurance agent who worked with the couple, testified in court that the multiple policies raised red flags. He explained that such behavior was unusual and would trigger an investigation.
Furthermore, Mann had also sought policies from multiple insurance companies, making his actions even more concerning. Humphreys commented that someone applying for a large number of policies could be likened to “throwing spaghetti at the wall,” a metaphor for someone trying to cover all their bases in the hopes that one would pay out.
Mann’s Attempts to Deflect Suspicion
As the investigation into the poisoning gained momentum, Mann attempted to deflect suspicion by claiming that he, along with his children, was also being poisoned with lead. He went as far as to tell a nurse practitioner about the supposed poisoning and even claimed to have performed an X-ray on himself.
However, when the nurse practitioner suggested he undergo another X-ray to determine whether the poisoning was recent or ongoing, Mann became visibly nervous and eager to leave, prompting further suspicion.
When an X-ray was conducted on Mann, it revealed that there was a substance in his stomach that had only been there for a short time. This discovery further linked him to the poisoning, solidifying the case against him.
The Trial and Verdict
Throughout the trial, Pettey’s emotional testimony highlighted the manipulative and dangerous behavior of her husband. She explained how Mann had isolated her from her family, deleted her social media accounts, and attempted to control her life.
Even after the poisoning attempt, Pettey revealed that the effects of the lead still linger in her body, leaving her with pain in her hands and infertility due to the high levels of lead in her bones.
On Thursday, after hearing all the evidence, the jury found Brian Mann guilty of attempted murder. His actions had not only endangered his wife’s life but also demonstrated a calculated attempt to profit from her death through life insurance policies.
The conviction of Brian Mann serves as a reminder of the extent to which some individuals may go to manipulate and harm others for personal gain. Thanks to the bravery and resilience of Hannah Pettey, justice has been served.
Pettey’s testimony played a crucial role in bringing her husband’s dark intentions to light, ensuring that he will face the consequences of his actions. As the case concludes, Pettey can begin to move forward from the trauma caused by Mann’s attempt to kill her.
