Matt Shaheen serves as District 66 representative in the State House of Representatives

Texas State Rep. Matt Shaheen of Plano announced today that he won’t be running against Phillip Huffines in the Republican Primary race for State Senate in District 8.

Shaheen said: “After much prayer, counsel and reflection on the Special Session, I have decided to seek another term in the Texas House of Representatives serving the citizens of House District 66. It is clear that the battle for the future of a better Texas lies in the House of Representatives, and I belong in that fight.”

Phillip Huffines said: “Matt Shaheen is a principled conservative and a true patriot. The constituents of House District 66 are fortunate to have him serve as their representative in the Texas House. I look forward to working with Representative Shaheen on the campaign trail. Our campaign will continue to work hard to put out our conservative message, and earn every vote. We gain momentum every day.”

Matt Shaheen: Tax Relief During Special Session #txlege

This week I filed H.B. 220, creating relief for millions of Texans suffering from high property taxes.  My proposed legislation will restrict local governments from substantially raising your property taxes without your approval.  High property taxes are by far, the number one complaint I receive and I want you to know that I hear you loud and clear!

My bill addresses the current “rollback” tax rate—currently set at 8 percent—and reduces it to 5 percent, meaning if local entities raise property taxes more than 5%, an automatic election to ratify that raise is triggered.  If taxpayers vote against the rise in property taxes, the rate returns to 5%.

The bill is one of the 20 items Governor Abbott placed on the agenda for the special session and I look forward to working with the rest of the House, Lieutenant Governor Patrick, and Governor Abbott to provide meaningful property tax relief to Texas families.

I always want to hear from you so please feel free to call my Capitol office at (512) 463-0594 or email me at matt.shaheen@house.texas.gov.

As always, thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving you in the Texas Legislature.
