Plano girls win Regional Semifinal over Frenship, 64-49

Fort Worth, Texas: The Plano Wildcats, led by 24 points from sophomore Jordyn Merritt, won the Class 6A Region Semifinal with a 64-49, win over Frenship at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center on Friday night.

Plano, which employed man-to-man coverage to stop Frenship, takes on top-ranked Duncanville in the girls basketball Region Final at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth. Duncanville beat No. 9 Arlington Bowie, 65-44, to advance.

Plano senior Katie Ferrell blocked three shots against Frenship.

Wildcats junior Zaria Collins had 11 points for Plano, and freshman Mikayla Eddins posted 10 points.

Plano senior LoLo Davenport sparked the Wildcats with nine points and some big defensive plays in the second half.

Plano’s Ferrell finished with five points, three key assists and five boards. Merritt had seven rebounds, and Collins had five boards.

Maggie Robbins scored five points for the Wildcats.

On Friday, Plano led, 28-25, at halftime, and 47-33 after three quarters.

Plano beat Cedar Hill, 53-43, on Tuesday in the regional quarterfinals at Mesquite Poteet.

Before that the Wildcats won the Area Round, 62-61, in double overtime over DeSoto at Richardson High School.

District champion Plano won Bi-District over Hurst L.D. Bell, 71-64, at Coppell.

Big win: Plano 53, Cedar Hill 43

The Plano Wildcats are making a historic run in the state girls high school basketball playoffs, stealing the ball a dozen times to advance with a 53-43 victory over Cedar Hill on Tuesday in Mesquite in the regional quarterfinals.

Cedar Hill led, 21-20, at halftime.

The Plano Wildcats play next against Frenship on Friday. The regional semifinal basketball playoff will be on the south side of Fort Worth off I-20 at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

Senior Emma Halverson led Plano with four steals, 10 rebounds and 15 points.

Plano sophomore Jordyn Merritt scored 16 points against Cedar Hill.

Sophie Fleites had 10 points including a big 3-pointer in the second half. Katie Ferrell scored eight in the win.

Junior Zaria Collins came up big on defense with four steals and added two points. Mikayla Eddins also had two points.

The Wildcats hope to have back senior LoLo Davenport against Frenship.

Girls basketball: Allen, Plano, Plano East win by slim margins; Owens scores 36 points for Plano West

Allen edged Plano West, 59-56, as Sydney Hardeman scored 19 points  and Klaire Bentley scored 11. Plano West’s Jaden Owens scored 36 of her team’s 56 points. Morgan Smith had eight on Friday.

Plano’s Jordyn Merritt scored 20 and Emma Halverson had 12 in a 55-53 win over McKinney. Quincy Noble pumped in 22 points for McKinney with Kayla Mautry adding 10 and JaMiya Braxton nine.

Plano East held off Denton Guyer, 56-52, behind 19 points from Tavy Diggs and 16 from Kendall Parker.

Wylie beat McKinney Boyd, 63-44, as Madi Miller scored 20 points. Lauren Brown had 16. Brynee Scott had 17 for Boyd. Symmone James added 13.

Frisco Reedy defeated Wakeland, 55-40, as Christina Mason scored 14 points. Jadyn Bauss had 13 and Mary Rose Foster 12. Kyra Kelley scored 11 for Wakeland.

Frisco Liberty, led by 13 points from Katelyn Burtch, 11 from Randi Thompson and 10 from Kelsey Kurak beat Centennial, 50-16.

Frisco Independence topped Heritage, 54-43, in overtime. Independence had a 13-2 run in overtime. Shelby Dugas scored 23 for Independence, and Ashley Batac scored 15 and Trinity Garcia had 14 for Heritage.
