Oklahoma State tops Arkansas at Frisco College Baseball Classic

No. 14-ranked Oklahoma State beat No. 20 Arkansas, 8-3, in the Frisco College Baseball Classic at the Dr Pepper Ballpark as the OSU Cowboys went 2-1 for the weekend. Cade Cabbiness punched a pinch-hit triple for the insurance run to score Colin Simpson.

Earlier in the sixth, Oklahoma State junior Garrett McCain from Wylie East hit a double down the right-field line to give OSU a four-run lead. OSU also put three runners on in the fifth but Arkansas found a way out of that troubled spot. OSU’s loss in the tournament was a 10-9 outcome won by Arizona.

OSU also beat Nebraska, 1-0, on Friday with Prestonwood’s Jonathan Heasley picking up the save.

McCain had a high school career .405 batting average with seven home runs, 79 RBIs, 26 doubles and 11 triples. He was 17-5 with a 2.88 ERA on the mound, had seven complete games and three shutouts in pitching career and struck out 211 in 146 innings. McCain pitched a perfect game. As a senior was District 13-4A MVP, North Texas Coaches Association All-Star and Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star. … Football fans also remember McCain playing quarterback.

In addition to McCain being a local star, OSU has freshman infielder Ryan Cash and freshman right-handed pitcher Jonathan Heasley – both Cash and Heasley played for Prestonwood Christian in Plano. Heasley went 29-3 with a 1.47 ERA and 310 strikeouts during his career at Prestonwood, where he helped lead the Lions to a 35-1 record and state title as a senior. Cash hit .465 and recorded 23 RBIs as a senior at PCA.

In Houston, Baylor’s Tucker Cascadden smashed a grand slam as the Bears baseball team beat 11th-ranked Texas A&M, 6-3, on Sunday in the Shriner’s Hospital for Children College Classic at the Minute Maid Park.

The home run by the former San Jacinto player improves Baylor’s record to 11-1. (Video Baylor Athletics). The Bears trailed, 3-1, heading to bottom of ninth, before winning on Cascadden’s grand slam.

Wylie East’s Braden Shewmake went 1-5 with a homer and 2 RBIs for Texas A&M in a 9-0 win over Texas Tech on Friday at Minute Maid Park. Shewmake was 2-7 with a triple and two runs scored in an 11-10 loss against TCU on Saturday.

Shewmake was 2-4 with two doubles and a run scored against Baylor in the Sunday game, won by the Bears, 6-3, in downtown Houston.
