Jovian T. Smith, a 26-year-old man, was arrested in Nashville after allegedly shooting his 41-year-old girlfriend and her five children on Friday night. The shooting occurred after a domestic dispute between Smith and the woman. The couple, along with the woman’s five children, had traveled from Iowa to Nashville to visit family. The children ranged in age from 1 to 13 years old.
The incident took place while the family was traveling in a Dodge minivan. According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police, an argument between Smith and his girlfriend escalated into a physical confrontation. Smith reportedly threw the woman’s phone out of the vehicle and tried to grab the steering wheel, causing the driver to lose control of the situation.
Shooting and Aftermath
At some point during the altercation, the woman managed to pull over the vehicle on a suburban road. This is when Smith allegedly opened fire on her, injuring her multiple times. Despite being injured, the woman managed to escape the van and run for help.
However, Smith reportedly continued his attack by turning the gun on the children. He fired several shots at the kids, with one of them, a 4-year-old girl, tragically losing her life.
