McHenry County, IL — Connor C. Kirkpatrick, 30, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for residential arson after attempting to burn down his father’s home in May 2023.
The sentencing came after Kirkpatrick was found guilty in March, following an incident where he initially lied to deputies, claiming he “woke up to a fire in the home.” However, he later admitted to starting the fire himself. Fortunately, no one was in the house at the time, and there were no injuries.
Arson Committed While Awaiting Trial for Previous Car Crash
The arson occurred while Kirkpatrick was out on bond for charges related to a car crash that took place in July 2022. On that day, Kirkpatrick was driving a Subaru SUV at speeds of 100 mph in a residential area.
He was reportedly naked and suicidal when he crashed into the home of 67-year-old Angelo Pleotis, a retired grandfather. Pleotis, who was just getting out of the shower, was struck by the vehicle and sent through the bathroom wall, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
Kirkpatrick was also injured in the crash and later surrendered to authorities. The incident devastated Pleotis, who was unable to attend his daughter’s wedding due to his injuries.
Mental Health Defense and Sentencing
At the arson trial, Kirkpatrick testified that he set the fire because he was attempting to end his life. His defense team pointed to a history of untreated mental illness. Prosecutors, however, argued that despite his mental health issues, Kirkpatrick posed a danger to the public and needed to be incarcerated.
Judge Tiffany Davis sentenced Kirkpatrick to 10 years, a compromise between the defense’s request for four years and the prosecution’s demand for 15 years.
Pleotis Family’s Presence at Sentencing
Angelo Pleotis and his family were present at the sentencing, and the paralyzed retiree spoke directly to Kirkpatrick from his motorized wheelchair. He remarked, “Enjoy prison life. I’m sure you’ll meet some nice friends there.”
