‘Tantamount to suicide’: Convicted killer seeks death penalty for murder of son’s mother, but jury grants him life

'Tantamount to suicide': Convicted killer seeks death penalty for murder of son's mother, but jury grants him life

An Alabama man, Arkeem Marshall, will spend the rest of his life in prison for the tragic murder of TiMira Pullom, the mother of his child. Despite his desire to die by execution, Marshall was sentenced to life without parole following his conviction for capital murder.

A Quick Verdict and a Tense Courtroom

Marshall, 33, was convicted on Thursday for the September 2023 shooting death of Pullom, 28. The jury in Jefferson County quickly deliberated, reaching a verdict of guilty within just 15 minutes. However, deciding on Marshall’s punishment took much longer.

In the end, the jury sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, despite the fact that Marshall expressed a desire for the death penalty. This led to a tense and emotional courtroom situation, with his defense attorneys refusing to argue for a death sentence, as Marshall had ordered them not to.

His attorneys even tried to have him evaluated for mental competency, believing that his decision to seek death was a form of self-destruction. However, Judge Shanta Owens rejected the request, noting that Marshall had previously passed competency tests.

The Lack of Defense and the Emotional Impact

As the sentencing proceeded, Marshall’s attorneys respected his wishes not to present a defense for his life. Public defender Paul McDaniel, visibly emotional, explained that arguing against the death penalty would have gone against Marshall’s clear request, which he described as “tantamount to suicide.”

Marshall himself showed little emotion during the proceedings, aside from a brief moment of remorse. When given the opportunity to address the court, he asked for the jurors to leave so that he could privately apologize to Pullom’s family.

“I took her daughter from her, and I took my son’s mama from him,” Marshall said. “I want to say I’m sorry. She did not deserve it. She deserved to be here with her child. She deserved to spend her life with her son.”

The Tragic Details of the Murder

The murder took place during an argument between Marshall and Pullom about him moving out of her house. Despite the disagreement, Marshall had already packed his bags and was waiting for friends to give him a ride. However, the argument reignited, leading to a fatal escalation.

Marshall later told law enforcement that Pullom kept yelling at him, and in a moment of rage, he “snapped.” He pulled out a gun and shot her six times, hitting her four times. Their 17-month-old son, Trent, was nearby during the shooting. Marshall’s actions not only ended the life of Pullom but also forever altered the life of their young son, who is now 3 years old and being raised by his grandmother.

The Impact on the Victim’s Family

TiMira Pullom’s mother spoke in court, delivering a powerful victim impact statement. She described the overwhelming grief she has felt since her daughter’s death, saying, “There hasn’t been a day that has gone by that I haven’t cried. But I know I can cry and cry and cry, and she won’t come back in this lifetime.” The emotional testimony moved both the jurors and Marshall, who shed tears during the hearing.

Prosecutor’s Condemnation

The prosecution strongly condemned Marshall’s actions. Jefferson County Chief Deputy District Attorney Joe Roberts stated, “TiMira Pullom had never been anything but kind to the defendant. She had never done anything but try to help the defendant.” Roberts went on to emphasize the brutality of the crime, particularly the fact that Marshall killed Pullom while their young son was nearby.

A Life Sentence for a Tragic Act

In the end, Arkeem Marshall’s desire for the death penalty was not granted, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the lasting impact it has on families. Marshall’s actions have left a child without his mother and a family grappling with the pain of a senseless loss.
