Homeowners in New York are receiving much-needed relief this summer and fall with the distribution of checks and credits from the School Tax Relief (STAR) Program. This initiative is set to benefit nearly 3 million residents, with a total of $2.2 billion allocated to help alleviate the burden of school property taxes.
What is the STAR Program?
The STAR program provides tax relief to eligible homeowners by reducing their school property taxes. The program is divided into two categories:
- Basic STAR: Available to homeowners with an income of $500,000 or less.
- Enhanced STAR: Available for seniors aged 65 or older (or one of the spouses in the case of couples) with a combined income of $107,300 or less for the 2025 fiscal year.
When Will New Yorkers Receive Their Payments?
The STAR payments began distribution in June and July, particularly for those with tax deadlines in July. The remaining checks and direct deposits will continue to be distributed between August, September, and October.
Eligibility Criteria for STAR Payments
To qualify for the STAR credit, homeowners must meet the following requirements:
STAR Credit:
Own and live in the home as the primary residence.
Total household income of $500,000 or less for Basic STAR.
Total household income of $250,000 or less for the STAR extension.
Enhanced STAR Credit:
Must be 65 years of age or older by the end of the calendar year (applicable to the homeowner, spouse, or sibling living on the property).
Must be the owner and live in the home as the primary residence.
Total household income of $107,300 or less for the 2025 benefits.
For many homeowners, the arrival of these checks aligns perfectly with the back-to-school season, offering essential financial support.
