In a shocking incident from Oregon, an 82-year-old woman was brutally attacked while walking on a peaceful trail. She was left unconscious with serious injuries, but thanks to alert bystanders, she received medical help in time. An 18-year-old man has now been arrested in connection with the attack.
What Happened on the Trail?
The attack took place on Sunday around 6:45 p.m. on the Fanno Creek Trail in Tigard, a city near Portland. The elderly woman was taking a walk when, as per police, a young man began following her.
Without warning, the man allegedly attacked her physically and then ran away, leaving her unconscious on the trail. Luckily, some bikers passed by shortly after and immediately called 911. She was rushed to the hospital, where she remained as of Tuesday, according to the police update.
Who Is the Suspect?
The suspect, Marcellus Ford, 18, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with second-degree assault. He is currently in Washington County Jail and made a virtual court appearance on Wednesday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week.
According to the Tigard Police Department, Ford is from Tigard, the same area where the assault occurred.
How Was He Identified?
Police called the incident a “random attack” and didn’t believe the victim knew her attacker. However, investigators received a major clue — a photo of the suspect at the nearby Tigard Public Library, taken shortly after the attack.
The image was released to the public, and with community help, police were quickly able to identify and arrest Ford.
“We’d like to thank our partners in the community for their help,” Tigard Police said.
What Are Locals Saying?
People living nearby say such violent crime is rare on the Fanno Creek Trail.
One resident told KGW News,
“I walk the trail every day, five days a week, and I’ve never had any problems.”
Another man said the trail is “super safe” and praised the city’s efforts to keep it clean and accessible, especially after a new bridge was built.
“The more people use the trail, the safer it becomes,” said Darin Swanson. “And if something does happen, others are around to help quickly – like they did in this case.”
The incident has shaken many people who use the trail daily. But it has also shown how quick community action can make a difference. As the victim recovers, residents hope the area remains safe and peaceful, as it always has been.
