A Georgia man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing his wife’s SUV and then using it to hit her several times in an attempt to run her over. The incident, which occurred in early February, has led to serious charges, including attempted murder and aggravated battery.
The Attack and Allegations
Twan Maurice Byrd was arrested in February and later indicted on several felony charges. Prosecutors say that on February 3, Byrd stole his wife’s Chevy Equinox. Witnesses reported seeing him hit his wife with the SUV “multiple times” and try to run her over on the curb.
After this, Byrd allegedly backed over her before the victim managed to escape into a nearby car wash, where Byrd reportedly hit her again before fleeing the scene on foot.
Victim’s Injuries and Byrd’s Actions
According to authorities, Byrd’s wife was left seriously injured, bleeding heavily from her nose and mouth and suffering a broken leg. She was able to identify Byrd as the person who attacked her before being taken to the hospital. Prosecutors described her leg injuries as “seriously disfiguring.”
In addition to the vehicle attack, Byrd is accused of strangling his wife and striking her in the face during the same incident.
Attempts to Influence Witnesses
Prosecutors also accused Byrd of attempting to prevent his wife from testifying against him in their ongoing divorce proceedings.
According to the bill of indictment, Byrd allegedly offered his wife anything she wanted in exchange for her agreeing not to testify. Furthermore, he is accused of stalking his wife, making “harassing and intimidating” phone calls to her after the incident.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Byrd faces several serious charges, including hijacking a motor vehicle, criminal attempt to commit murder, kidnapping, influencing a witness, stalking, obstruction of an officer, and three counts of aggravated battery. He is currently being held in the Chatham County Jail without bond.
Byrd is scheduled for an arraignment on October 1. As the case unfolds, it is expected to draw significant attention due to the severity of the charges and the violent nature of the alleged attack.
This case highlights the extreme lengths to which Byrd allegedly went in his violent confrontation with his wife, involving not just physical assault but also attempts to manipulate the legal process.
The charges against him reflect the seriousness of his actions, and the legal proceedings will likely continue to bring new developments in the coming months.
