A high school teacher and basketball coach in North Carolina has been charged with serious crimes after allegedly putting a 15-year-old student in a chokehold, causing him to lose consciousness. The shocking incident reportedly took place in March this year at Douglas Byrd High School in Fayetteville.
What Happened?
The teacher, 41-year-old Devon Murphy, was arrested on July 31 and is now facing charges of felony assault by strangulation and misdemeanor child abuse.
According to police, the incident happened on March 25 when Murphy allegedly wrapped his arm around the neck of a 15-year-old boy and applied pressure until the student passed out.
The student also suffered swelling on the right side of his forehead as a result of the attack, as mentioned in the arrest warrant. The injuries were described as “not accidental,” and the police stated that the teacher was responsible for the physical harm due to his role as a caregiver and educator.
School and Police Response
As soon as Cumberland County Schools (CCS) became aware of the situation, Murphy was suspended with pay. He worked at Douglas Byrd High School as a criminal justice teacher and boys’ varsity basketball coach.
The school system told local news outlet WNCN that the safety of students is their top priority and that the allegations are extremely serious. CCS also made it clear that such actions do not represent the values and behavior expected from school staff.
Ongoing Investigation
The case is still being investigated by the Fayetteville Police Department’s Youth Services Unit. Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have more information or anyone who believes they were also harmed to come forward.
Murphy was booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center but is now out on a $25,000 secured bond. He has a court hearing scheduled for August 20.
This troubling case has raised concerns about student safety and the conduct of educators in schools. Allegations of physical abuse by someone in a position of trust are serious and need thorough investigation.
The authorities are continuing to look into the matter, and the student involved is receiving support. Schools must ensure such incidents are never repeated, and justice is done for those harmed.
