Drivers traveling on SH 288 in South Houston can expect a significant change to their toll expenses starting September 1, 2025. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a nearly 50% reduction in toll rates for the Harris County stretch of the highway, offering relief to motorists.

What’s Behind the Toll Reduction?

The toll rate reduction is part of an effort by TxDOT to ease the financial strain on drivers and maintain smooth traffic flow on SH 288.

However, the new rates will not apply during certain peak traffic hours when TxDOT aims to ensure a minimum speed on the managed lanes. This adjustment helps prevent congestion during busier times of the day.

Governor Greg Abbott praised the rate reduction, stating that it fulfills his promise of reducing taxes while also reducing traffic congestion. “By lowering toll rates and adding free lanes along SH 288, we will achieve that goal while also easing roadway congestion,” Abbott said in a statement.

TxDOT’s Efforts to Improve the Highway

The toll rate reduction is just one part of a broader plan for SH 288. In October 2024, TxDOT took over the operations of SH 288, with the dual purpose of reducing tolls and fast-tracking corridor improvements.

Additionally, part of the toll revenue will be used to reimburse the state highway fund by $1.7 billion, ensuring that other state projects remain on schedule.

TxDOT is also planning to add free lanes to SH 288, which will help reduce congestion and make the commute between downtown Houston and Brazoria County smoother. Transportation Commissioner Steven Alvis emphasized that this move reflects Texas’s commitment to improving its roadways for residents.

Future Road Improvements

As part of the overall plan, new general-purpose lanes will be added to SH 288, especially between IH 610 and Beltway 8. This expansion aims to reduce traffic and make daily commutes more manageable for drivers in the area.

Toll Collection Process

The Harris County Toll Road Authority will continue handling toll collection and customer account management for the TxDOT-operated section of SH 288, which stretches for over 10 miles and ends at the Harris and Brazoria County line.

Toll rates will remain variable, changing every 30 minutes based on factors such as time of day, vehicle type, and traffic conditions. This system is designed to prevent congestion and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
