In a deeply disturbing case from Texas, a young man who admitted to hitting his mother with a hammer has now been charged with murder after she died from her injuries.
The incident came to light through a confession he made to a friend during an online game. The shocking details have left many horrified, especially as the victim was left suffering for hours before help arrived.
Son Confesses to Brutal Hammer Attack on Mother
Robert Babin, 24, was initially charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly beat his 61-year-old mother, Lisa Babin, with a hammer on June 11. He later confessed to the crime during a conversation with a friend on a gaming platform.
That friend, after seeing the messages two hours later, quickly called 911. But by the time help arrived, Lisa had already suffered serious injuries and was barely breathing.
Confession Revealed Through Online Chat
According to court records, Robert messaged his friend saying he had attacked his mother in a fit of anger and didn’t know what to do next. He admitted to hitting her on the head and side with a hammer and said she was struggling to breathe.
He also expressed fear of being sent to prison or ending up on death row, and said he planned to hide the hammer and destroy evidence before the police arrived.
Mother Dies Nine Days After the Attack
Lisa Babin fought for her life but died nine days later. Her injuries were so severe that she couldn’t speak or share her side of the story. With her passing, prosecutors upgraded Robert’s charge from aggravated assault to murder. The incident happened in their backyard in the 18700 Block of Holly Way in Harris County.
Police: Argument May Have Led to the Attack
Authorities believe the attack followed a verbal argument between Robert and his mother. Major Ben Katrib from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said initial investigations suggest Robert got angry during the argument and hit his mother multiple times.
He also tried to cover up the crime, according to the officers, but the friend he had confided in acted responsibly by calling 911.
Robert Babin Now Facing Murder Charges
Robert Babin is now being held in Harris County Jail with a bond set at $350,000. His current charge is murder. To be sentenced to death, however, his charge would need to be upgraded to capital murder, which hasn’t happened yet. For now, he awaits trial behind bars.
This tragic case has shaken the community, showing how quickly anger can lead to devastating consequences. A mother lost her life in a brutal attack, and a son now faces the possibility of spending his life behind bars.
While justice may be served in court, the emotional damage to those involved will last forever. This case also reminds us of the importance of speaking up — if the friend hadn’t reported the confession, authorities might not have reached in time.
