The Dallas Cowboys have signed tight end Jake Ferguson to a four-year, $52 million contract extension, which includes a $12 million signing bonus. Ferguson, who was drafted as a fourth-round pick in 2022, is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Coach Praises Ferguson’s Work Ethic

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer shared his excitement for Ferguson’s new deal, praising his passion for the game and his leadership. “He loves football,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s got that throwback type mentality.”

Schottenheimer also mentioned that Ferguson didn’t have his best season last year, but the team continues to value his physical play style and competitive spirit.

Ferguson’s 2023 Performance

Ferguson had 59 catches for 494 yards last season but didn’t manage to score a touchdown. The year before, he set career highs with 71 catches, 761 yards, and five touchdowns. While Ferguson battled through knee and concussion issues in 2023, he still managed to start 14 games.

Coach Schottenheimer’s Expectations

Schottenheimer acknowledged Ferguson’s struggles last season but believes the tight end will bounce back. He mentioned that Ferguson’s performance last year wasn’t up to either his own or the team’s expectations.

However, Schottenheimer added that Ferguson’s previous performance shows what he’s capable of and that they plan to use him more effectively moving forward, especially in red-zone situations and contested catches.

Micah Parsons’ Ongoing Contract Negotiations

This contract extension for Ferguson comes as two-time All-Pro defensive end Micah Parsons is still in talks for his own contract extension. Parsons is also in the final season of his rookie contract. The defensive star recently mentioned that there hasn’t been much progress in his contract talks yet.
