What Happened?
Valentino Gutierrez, 64, is accused of killing his 31-year-old wife, Tiana Alfred, in a horrifying crime back in 2018. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, he allegedly strangled Alfred, cut her body into pieces, and stuffed the remains inside a suitcase.
But the crime did not stop there. Gutierrez then reportedly carried the suitcase, along with a bicycle, on a Gold Line Metro train in Pasadena. After getting off at the Lincoln/Cypress Station, he rode his bike to a Home Depot parking lot on Figueroa Street, where he tried to burn the suitcase.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the flames. What they found inside was shocking—human remains. Police used surveillance footage from the area, which led them to identify and arrest Gutierrez.
The murder is believed to have happened around January 31, 2018, at a closed-down restaurant in Pasadena. This is where authorities think the dismemberment took place. Investigators say no official motive has been found, but the crime has been described as brutal and cold-blooded.
Mental Health Question Halts the Trial
On July 17, 2025, during a court hearing, Gutierrez’s defense lawyers raised a concern about his mental competence. They claimed he may not be mentally fit to face trial. As a result, the court has suspended the proceedings.
Gutierrez is now scheduled to appear again on July 31, 2025, for a mental-competency hearing. This will decide whether the murder trial will continue or if Gutierrez needs mental health treatment first.
