An off-duty federal officer was shot in New York City after an attempted robbery on the night of July 19, 2025. The officer, who works for the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), was attacked while in Riverside Park with a friend. Authorities have taken two people into custody following the incident.
Details of the Incident
The 42-year-old CBP officer was in Riverside Park, located near the water, when two men approached them on a scooter just before midnight. One of the men displayed a firearm and fired at least two shots, hitting the officer in the face and forearm. In response, the officer, who was off-duty at the time, returned fire with his service weapon.
Suspect Arrested and Investigation Underway
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, was injured during the exchange of gunfire and later arrested. Video footage released by Homeland Security showed the dramatic moment when the officer and Mora exchanged shots.
Mora was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and underwent surgery. He was later arrested in connection with the shooting. According to officials, Mora has a criminal history in both New York and Massachusetts.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that Mora had entered the U.S. illegally through Arizona in 2023. He also had a history of prior arrests, including domestic violence charges, and was wanted for robbery and felony assault charges.
Officer’s Recovery and Second Suspect in Custody
The injured CBP officer is now recovering in a Manhattan hospital. Officials praised the officer’s bravery during the confrontation. Meanwhile, Mora’s accomplice, who had initially evaded capture, was taken into custody on Monday.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that the second suspect will face charges for his role in the attempted robbery and shooting. Noem expressed confidence that the suspect would be strongly prosecuted for his involvement in the crime.
This violent encounter highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers, even when they are off-duty. Despite the serious injuries, the CBP officer survived the attack and is recovering.
