A Florida caregiver has been arrested after being accused of neglecting an elderly woman who was living in hazardous and unsanitary conditions. Melanie Hess, 56, was charged with neglecting an elderly, disabled adult following a welfare check at her home in St. Lucie County.
The Horrible Conditions Inside the Home
When deputies arrived at Hess’ residence, they were shocked by the filthy conditions. The house appeared abandoned from the outside, with a yard overgrown with weeds. A strong odor of feces, urine, and animals filled the air as authorities approached.
Inside, the elderly woman was found lying on a bed covered with leaves, in a room filled with spider webs. The bed had not been cleaned for a long time, and the woman looked weak, unable to answer questions.
The deputy noticed that the house lacked both working air conditioning and a refrigerator. The elderly woman’s clothes were unwashed, and she had dirty, discolored hands and nails. She also had sores on her arms and severely knotted hair. The deputy reported that the elderly woman couldn’t remember when she last ate.
Unsanitary and Dangerous Living Conditions
The deputy’s observations revealed more disturbing details. Inside the house, there was a severe cockroach infestation, with 2-3 inch roaches everywhere, along with roach feces.
Cat feces and urine were found where the woman slept, and there were at least nine cats in the home. These unsanitary living conditions raised serious concerns about the woman’s health and well-being.
The Victim’s Medical Evaluation
The elderly woman was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. Authorities are still investigating the full extent of her neglect and the effects of the unsanitary environment on her health.
Hess Arrested and Released
Melanie Hess was arrested on Friday and charged with neglecting an elderly and disabled adult. She was booked at the St. Lucie County Jail and released on bond the following day.
