A California woman was tragically shot and killed during a late-night walk with her boyfriend and dogs last week, in what authorities are calling a senseless act of violence.
According to the San Leandro Police Department, the suspect, 21-year-old Rohith Sunil, allegedly pulled up in a vehicle, accosted the couple, and opened fire before speeding away.
The Fatal Incident
The shooting occurred on Thursday night, around 11:11 p.m., near East 14th and Williams streets in San Leandro, Alameda County. Police reported that the couple was walking their dogs in the 1800 block of East 14th Street when Sunil’s vehicle stopped nearby.
After a brief confrontation, Sunil allegedly shot the woman in the torso before fleeing the scene.
Despite efforts to rush her to the hospital, the woman did not survive her injuries. Fortunately, her boyfriend and the two dogs were physically unharmed during the incident.
Arrest and Investigation
Sunil, from San Jose, was arrested by the Dublin Police Department just before midnight on the same night for possession of a firearm.
Upon further investigation, authorities found that the circumstances surrounding his arrest closely matched the description of the shooting in San Leandro. Detectives gathered more evidence, leading to Sunil’s arrest for murder.
San Leandro Police released surveillance footage showing the woman and her boyfriend walking together moments before the fatal shooting. The police have not disclosed the motive behind the attack but are continuing their investigation.
Concerns Over Safety in the Community
This incident follows a similar case just weeks earlier in which another person was gunned down while walking their dog in San Leandro.
The community is now on edge, with residents fearing for their safety during nighttime walks. While the police have not found any connections between the two shootings, local residents remain concerned.
Dulce Macias, a San Leandro resident, shared her fears with local media, saying, “I’m scared. You can’t even go for a walk now.” The public’s concerns have prompted police to assure residents that they are taking the matter seriously but have yet to release details about a potential motive or link between the two incidents.
The Investigation Continues
While an arrest has been made, the police are urging anyone with additional information about the shooting to come forward. They are also seeking tips through their anonymous tip line.
