Authorities in Texas are investigating the shooting of an 18-year-old teenager who was shot while burying his recently deceased guinea pig in his backyard.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, just after 12:30 a.m. at the teen’s home in Houston. The shooter, believed to be a neighbor, remains unidentified, and the police investigation is ongoing.
The Tragic Incident
The victim, whose identity has not been publicly released, was in the backyard with his brother, burying his guinea pig, named “Cookie,” which had passed away the previous day.
According to the victim’s mother, Andrea, her son had not been able to bury the pet earlier due to the timing of its death, but he finally got the chance to do so on Thursday morning. Andrea told WFAA that her son was burying the guinea pig on their property and had never stepped onto the neighbor’s land.
However, while the two brothers were mourning the loss of their pet, a neighbor allegedly shot the teen. The shooting occurred without warning, and the teenager was left bleeding as he stumbled into his mother’s room. In a heartbreaking moment, he reportedly told his mother, “Mom, I love you. Dad, I love you, I’m not going to make it.”
The Teen’s Survival and Ongoing Investigation
Despite the serious injury, the teenager survived the attack and is now in recovery, according to reports from Click 2 Houston. Surveillance footage shared by WFAA showed the victim stumbling towards his door after the shooting. Thankfully, he managed to make it inside, where his family was able to assist him.
At this point, authorities have not released the name of the suspect, but they have confirmed that the shooter is believed to be a neighbor of the victim.
