The Galveston Parks Board has officially dismissed Peter Davis, the Chief of Galveston Island Beach Patrol, after placing him on administrative leave earlier this year. This decision follows ongoing investigations into the operations of both the Park Board and Beach Patrol.
Reason Behind the Termination
In April, Peter Davis was placed on administrative leave due to concerns over how he managed Beach Patrol resources and personnel. The issue stemmed from his alleged decision to allow members of the National Chilean Lifeguard Federation to stay in the rundown Stewart Beach Pavilion last year.
The pavilion, which is now demolished, became a focal point of the investigation.
Interim CEO Marty Miles addressed the termination decision, stating, “It is never an easy decision to remove an employee. Let me assure you, every factor was taken into account, but my number one priority at the end of the day is to have the right person overseeing the program that is responsible for the safety of every person who visits our beaches.”
Future Plans for Galveston Beach Patrol
With the termination of Davis, the Galveston Parks Board has appointed Austin Kirwin, a 14-year veteran with the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, as the interim Chief. Miles emphasized the importance of maintaining the quality of Galveston’s Beach Patrol, highlighting that it is one of the best programs in the country.
He assured residents and visitors that the necessary resources would continue to be allocated to ensure the safety of those enjoying the Gulf beaches.
The firing of Peter Davis marks a significant moment for the Galveston Island Beach Patrol as they work to maintain their high safety standards. The appointment of Austin Kirwin as interim chief brings hope for stability during this period of transition.
With continued commitment from the Parks Board, Galveston’s beach safety program is set to remain one of the best in the nation, ensuring protection for everyone who visits the Gulf.
