A hostage situation at a Michigan bank ended last week after authorities used an unusual strategy to draw the suspect out. The dramatic events unfolded on Friday evening at Mercantile Bank in Saginaw Township when a 31-year-old man took an employee hostage.

Around 5 p.m. on Friday, the suspect, later identified as Quinton Marquese Allen, walked into Mercantile Bank. He had reportedly planned to cash a check, but since the bank was closed, he was told by an employee that his check could not be cashed.
Allen then became aggressive, assaulting the employee and demanding money. At some point, he took the employee hostage, armed with a weapon, although it was not a gun, according to Michigan State Police Lt. Kim Vetter.
Law Enforcement Response
As news of the hostage situation spread, local police and Michigan State Police quickly arrived at the scene, bringing in SWAT-like vehicles and armed officers. The standoff lasted several hours, with authorities working to ensure the safety of the hostage while trying to negotiate with Allen.
A Creative Approach to De-escalate the Situation
During the standoff, law enforcement decided to try something unconventional. Lt. Vetter revealed that the police used a drone to drop a bag containing a red Faygo soda near the window where Allen was located.
Allen had reportedly asked for the drink during negotiations with authorities, and recognizing the familiar brand, he moved closer to the window. This shift allowed police to see him clearly through the glass, providing them with a moment of opportunity.
The End of the Standoff
Once the suspect was visible, a state police trooper took action and shot Allen, neutralizing the threat. Tragically, Allen was killed in the incident. Following the shooting, the hostage was safely freed from the bank and was quickly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Thankfully, the victim was released later that night, with only minor injuries. The entire standoff lasted around four hours.
Mercantile Bank’s Statement
In the aftermath, Mercantile Bank released a statement thanking local and state law enforcement for their quick and effective response. The bank also assured the public that the situation had been resolved, and there was no longer a threat to the community.
