In a shocking and tragic case, 28-year-old Patrick D. Proefriedt from Colesville, New York, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He killed his 17-day-old baby girl, Eleanor Carey, and seriously injured his wife, Megan Carey, using a crossbow.
The Broome County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the sentence, following Proefriedt’s guilty plea to second-degree murder earlier this year.
What Happened on June 26, 2023
Police were called to a home on Route 41, about 17 miles northeast of Binghamton, after a violent domestic incident. Proefriedt was reportedly angry because baby Eleanor was crying.
During an argument with his wife, he picked up a crossbow and fired an arrow at her while she held their newborn daughter. Both were struck. Megan survived, but baby Eleanor died at the scene.
Shocking Details from Authorities
After the attack, Proefriedt took away his wife’s phone so she couldn’t call for help, and ran into the woods to hide. Sheriff Fred Akshar described him as a “scared rat” during a press conference.
A large search operation was launched quickly by police and deputies, using drones and patrol cars to form a perimeter. Proefriedt was found hiding in the woods less than a mile from the house after his vehicle got stuck in the mud.
Mother’s Painful Words in Court
During sentencing, Megan Carey addressed the court emotionally. She said she still believes in love, healing, and forgiveness—but not for her husband. “He is beyond forgiveness,” she said. She spoke of the horror of watching her child die in her arms and the betrayal she felt from someone who was supposed to love and protect them.
No Remorse Shown by the Killer
Authorities said Proefriedt showed no care for what had happened. After being arrested, he blamed his wife, claiming she “dared him” to shoot. He didn’t even ask about the condition of his wife or their baby.
A heartbreaking 911 call played in court revealed Megan begging her daughter to stay alive, saying “stay with mommy” and “please don’t die.”
Final Sentencing and Apology
Before his sentencing, Proefriedt gave a short apology to his wife, saying it was “for the sake of my child.” But by then, the damage was done, and the court handed down a life sentence.
This terrible case has left a lasting impact on the community and Megan Carey’s life. It reminds us of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of getting help early.
The court’s decision to send Proefriedt to prison for life brings justice, but it cannot erase the loss of baby Eleanor. Her mother’s strength and words will hopefully inspire others to speak out and seek support in difficult situations.
