A Texas couple is facing murder charges after their 4-month-old daughter, Brookelynn Fancher, was found dead in a hotel drawer. The child was allegedly placed there to sleep, with a towel stuffed around the edges to prevent her from kicking the drawer open due to her “piercing” cries.
The tragic incident occurred at a Days Inn & Suites in the Mission Bend area of Harris County on May 26, 2024.
A Disturbing Discovery
Paramedics responded to a call at the hotel on May 26, 2024, after the infant was found unresponsive inside the drawer in her parents’ hotel room. First responders tried to revive Brookelynn, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
According to the criminal complaint filed by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the baby had been kept in the drawer multiple times before, and the parents reportedly laughed off complaints from a hotel housekeeper who had noticed the child in such a situation.
Horrifying Details from the Parents
Investigators learned from the parents, Destiny Campos, 21, and Jeremy Fancher, 38, that the couple had been placing Brookelynn inside the drawer to sleep due to her loud cries. According to Campos, Fancher had complained that the baby’s “piercing” screams were too much for him to handle.
In an effort to quiet the infant, Fancher would allegedly feed her a bottle. However, to keep her from kicking the drawer open, the parents reportedly stuffed a towel around the edges.
The criminal complaint also revealed disturbing past incidents. On one occasion, a housekeeper found Brookelynn crying inside the drawer while Campos was allegedly passed out in the room.
The housekeeper confronted Campos about the baby being left inside the drawer, but Campos reportedly laughed it off, saying it was fine.
Previous Warning Signs
According to the complaint, the housekeeper had come across Brookelynn crying inside the closed drawer on multiple occasions. On one such occasion, between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, the housekeeper opened the drawer to find the baby inside while her 18-month-old sibling sat on the floor, eating cookie crumbs.
The housekeeper had confronted Campos about the situation, but she simply laughed it off and said it was okay.
The Day of the Tragedy
On the day Brookelynn passed away, Campos told authorities that she had asked Fancher to watch the baby while she slept. Campos denied placing the child in the drawer. However, Fancher admitted to placing the baby inside the drawer, which was completely shut when he returned from a local store.
According to the complaint, the drawer was slightly open but not wide enough to see the baby when Fancher left for the store.
The parents’ disturbing treatment of their child has left the community in shock. The couple faces serious charges after their negligence allegedly led to the infant’s death.
This case serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of safeguarding children from harm, and it highlights the need for greater awareness and intervention when warning signs of abuse or neglect appear.
