Severe storms slammed through Grayson County on Sunday, bringing severe winds and hail to many cities.

According to 12’s First Alert Weather Team, the majority of the hail fell in southeast Sherman, including sections of Luella, Howe, and Van Alstyne. Heavy rainfall deposited water on low-lying sections of US-75.

As of noon Monday, Oncor reported that more over 500 Grayson County customers remained without power.

According to Howe Fire Chief Robert Maniet, the city saw severe gusts and hail, but no storm-related crashes were reported. He claims electricity poles along east FM 902 were smashed.

Power shortages at Howe’s intermediate and middle schools forced the closure of campuses on Monday. Superintendent Kevin Wilson says restoration is expected by noon, prompting the closure.

Van Alstyne police chief Tim Barnes stated in a press statement that storm-related damage includes many downed power and cable lines, a gas leak safely managed at the meter, and a snapped light pole. Barnes claims 1.5-inch hail pelted the city, but no casualties were reported.

Cleanup and power restoration in Van Alstyne are ongoing.

First responders advise drivers to slow down on icy roads as rain continues this week, and to treat all downed power wires as if they were live and dangerous. With more storms expected this week, remember to stay indoors when thunder roars.
