A man in California has learned his fate for hurting the mother of his child in a “vicious” attack, as authorities sentenced him this week.
Sentence Details
Nathan James Sumpter, 28, was sentenced to two years and eight months in state prison on Thursday, according to the Butte County District Attorney’s office. Sumpter had pleaded no contest to felony charges of assault likely to cause great bodily injury, dissuading a witness, and a misdemeanor for violating a previous restraining order.
Violent Incident
On July 8, Sumpter violated an active restraining order by going to the home of the mother of his child. Law enforcement responded to the scene but left after Sumpter hid in the house and threatened the victim and her family if she reported him. He then emerged from hiding and began his violent attack.
The following morning, Sumpter’s brutality escalated. He strangled the victim to the point of unconsciousness and stomped on her face in front of their two-year-old child. Authorities described the assault as especially vicious.
Victim’s Condition and Arrest
The victim was severely injured, remaining unresponsive for some time. She was eventually rushed to the hospital with a fractured eye socket. After being alerted by Sumpter, her aunt arrived at the scene. By the time law enforcement returned, Sumpter had fled the home but was later apprehended.
Prosecution vs. Defense
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey highlighted the “insidious nature” of domestic violence, particularly how it often occurs behind closed doors and negatively impacts families and communities.
Despite the defense attorney’s request for a probation term, the prosecution successfully argued for state prison time due to the egregious nature of the crime.
