In a shocking case from Buffalo Grove, a suburb of Chicago, a 34-year-old man is facing serious charges after allegedly trying to suffocate his wife with a pillow in their home. The victim managed to escape and seek help from a lawn care worker, who helped shield her from further harm.
Attempted Murder in Broad Daylight
On the morning of August 20, around 11 a.m., police say Cody Romano attacked his 29-year-old wife inside their home. The assault reportedly began after he smashed her phone, cutting off her ability to call for help.
According to a press release from the Buffalo Grove Police Department, Romano then attempted to suffocate her with a pillow, allegedly stating that he was going to kill her. In a desperate attempt to save her life, the woman managed to break free and flee the home.
Victim Seeks Help from a Lawn Care Worker
Once outside, the frightened woman spotted a lawn care worker nearby and ran towards him for protection. Police say the worker bravely got between the woman and Romano, who allegedly tried to drag her back inside the house.
“The female was able to struggle free and run onto the street where she found a lawn care worker, who shielded her as Mr. Romano tried to drag her back into the residence,” the police statement read.
After a brief struggle, Romano fled the scene before police arrived.
Romano’s Arrest and Hospitalisation
Police launched a manhunt for Romano, and he returned to the scene a short time later. Upon being taken into custody, Romano reportedly suffered a medical episode and was taken to the hospital. He was released from the hospital on August 28 and was then formally booked into police custody.

Romano is now facing multiple felony charges, including:
Attempted first-degree murder
Aggravated domestic battery
Domestic battery
Interfering with the reporting of domestic violence
He appeared in court last Friday and is currently being held without bond. His next court date is scheduled for September 23.
