Several emergency response organizations responded to two serious crashes on Interstate 20 early Saturday morning, which injured two people.
At around 4:30 a.m., the Elmo Fire Department responded to a truck-tractor and trailer with 72 head of cattle colliding with an abandoned vehicle on the shoulder of westbound Interstate freeway 20 at mile marker 506, causing the freeway to be closed.
The bull truck flipped on its side, letting many cattle loose on the highway.
In addition to the Texas Department of Public Safety and mutual help reaction, some cowboys and ranch hands rode horseback to round up the loose livestock.
Later that morning, the Elmo Fire Department was dispatched to an 18-wheeler-vs-vehicle incident on westbound Interstate 20 near mile marker 512. The route was closed, and a responding medical chopper airlifted one seriously injured person. Another victim was transported by ground to a nearby hospital.
The Elmo Fire Department reported that workers spent roughly nine hours on active scenes before returning to the station.
