McKinney’s Parks & Recreation department received national recognition in September for its efforts to maintain green space and provide recreational options that promote active lives.
According to a city news release, the department has received national accreditation under the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies program sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association.
According to the NRPA’s website, accreditation assesses a parks department’s overall quality of operation, management, and community service.
“Parks and open spaces are at the heart of McKinney’s unique by nature character,” Parks and Recreation Director Amy Kinkade stated. “Accreditation means that McKinney residents can have confidence in the city’s continued investment in quality of life.”
McKinney is currently one of 231 certified departments throughout the country. The National Recreation and Park Association has also recognized the parks departments in Frisco, Prosper, Plano, and Lewisville.
CAPRA assesses departments based on 154 requirements, including financial accountability, professional growth, and safety. McKinney’s parks department oversees 3,000 acres of parkland, over 100 miles of trails, and a network of recreation facilities throughout the city.
McKinney’s website provides further information about the department, including which parks and trails it oversees.
