ABILENE, Texas— During the third week of high school football, teams across the Big Country delivered numerous amazing performances, but one group of athletes stood out above the rest. This is our Player of the Week, sponsored by Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union.
Following a devastating loss in week two of the season, the Wylie Bulldogs worked hard to demonstrate that they would not be pushed around, and the big lads up front made that point clear.
The Bulldogs got out to a fast start against Lubbock Coronado in Week 3, scoring three rushing scores in the first quarter alone. In total, Wylie’s offense accumulated nearly 500 yards and eight touchdowns, demonstrating how dangerous their offense may be in 2025.
“We discuss trying to dominate the line of scrimmage every week. And they were able to do so from the first snap to the last.” Clay Martin, the Bulldogs’ head coach, told us, “When you can run the ball 52 times for 300 yards, those guys up front are opening great holes.”
I think our backs did an excellent job, but the credit must go to the offensive line and their execution of what we had planned.”
“I love winning…” Senior Center Barrett Huffington stated, “I enjoy dominating the other line. It feels fantastic. It appears that all of your hard work is finally paying off. So it’s fantastic to accomplish something.
Wylie was expected to score the majority of their points this year thanks to their outstanding ground game. That implies that the Bulldogs running backs and other skill players would be getting most of the praise; but, Wylie’s offensive line… they’re alright partying down in the trenches out of the spotlight.
“It feels fantastic. I love it when Julius goes into the endzone. That just means that we all get to enjoy.” Huffington informed us.
“Those men work really hard. “They’re extremely intelligent.” When asked about crediting his offensive line for the big win, Martin explained. “I believe that one of our most valuable assets is the intelligence of our offensive line.
A lot of people don’t realize how many calls those guys have to make and how much time they spend, so having some light shine on them is always a good thing.”
With only one nondistrict game remaining on the schedule, the Bulldogs are hoping their strong performance sends a message to every team they face.
Martin stated, “This was a huge step forward for us. This week, our execution was better, as were our assignments and how we completed them. Those players really got after it up front, and I’m quite happy of their effort and speed of play.
