A 34-year-old mother from Louisiana, Hilda Vasquez, has been arrested following the death of her 12-year-old son, Bryan Vasquez, whose body was discovered after a nearly two-week search.
Authorities have charged her with second-degree cruelty to a child and negligent homicide after Bryan was found dead from blunt force trauma caused by an alligator, leading to his subsequent drowning.
The Disappearance and Discovery of Bryan Vasquez
Bryan was reported missing by his mother on August 14, sparking an extensive search by local, state, and federal authorities. On August 26, volunteers and divers located Bryan’s body near a lagoon, where it was surrounded by two alligators.
The discovery of his body marked the tragic end to the search for the boy, who had previously fled his home following allegations of abuse and neglect.
A History of Abuse and Neglect
Authorities revealed that Bryan had been the victim of a long pattern of abuse and neglect at the hands of his mother. Chief Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier stated that this was not the first instance of trauma Bryan had suffered, including a history of injury dating back to when he was just three months old.
Vasquez was reportedly responsible for multiple severe injuries to her son, including a skull fracture and broken bones, which led to Bryan’s removal from the home by Child Protective Services (CPS) at the time. Despite these incidents, Bryan was eventually returned to the home by CPS.
Mother’s Account and Investigation
Vasquez told investigators that the night before Bryan went missing, she gave him a sleeping pill. She said she found him wandering the home early in the morning, but she walked him back to the room he shared with his younger sister and returned to bed.
The following morning, after leaving to take her 6-year-old child to school, she discovered Bryan was missing after her daughter informed her around 10 a.m.
The window in the bedroom was left open, but Vasquez claimed she did not secure it because Bryan had never previously attempted to run away, despite past incidents where he had tried to escape the home.
Authorities believe that Vasquez’s failure to protect her son contributed to his death after he wandered off and entered the water, where he was attacked by the alligators. The case is under investigation, with Vasquez facing charges for her neglect and the lasting injuries that led to Bryan’s tragic death.
