A Memphis man, Miguel Gomez Jr., has been charged with aggravated assault and domestic assault after allegedly attacking his father, Miguel Gomez Sr., over a dispute concerning a statement the elder made to one of the younger man’s friends.

The Incident Unfolds

The altercation occurred on August 10 in Memphis, Tennessee, at the home of Miguel Gomez Sr. on the 2800 block of Randy Cove. According to the arrest affidavit, Miguel Gomez Jr., 32, questioned his father about whether he had revealed to one of his friends that he was his father.

When Gomez Sr. confirmed that he had, it reportedly angered his son, leading to a violent outburst. The younger Gomez punched his father in the mouth with a closed fist, prompting the elder man to flee outside.

Escalating Violence

Despite his father’s attempt to escape, Gomez Jr. allegedly caught up with him, striking him again. The situation escalated when Gomez Jr. allegedly slammed his father to the ground and began dragging him across the pavement.

At this point, the affidavit states that Gomez Jr. wrapped his arm around his father’s neck and squeezed until he could no longer breathe.

A Witness Comes Forward

A man named Gonzalo, who was driving down the street, witnessed the attack and shouted at the suspect, causing him to temporarily release his grip. However, Gomez Sr. was still not freed. In a desperate attempt to break free, the elder Gomez reportedly bit his son near the chest, allowing him to stand up and run to his truck.

The Aftermath

Gomez Sr. drove to a nearby police station, where he reported the incident. Upon inspection, police found visible injuries on his body, including cuts on his mouth, swelling on his head, and an abrasion on his arm. He identified his son as the attacker.

Legal Consequences

Miguel Gomez Jr. was arrested and booked into the Shelby County Jail on August 17. He was assessed a bond of $200,000 for the charges against him. During a preliminary hearing this week, a judge granted the state’s motion to revoke his bond.
