A Texas mother has been charged with capital murder after police say she repeatedly stabbed her 9-year-old son to death while he lay in his bed, shocking a San Antonio-area community.
The Arrest
Authorities identified the suspect as 50-year-old Wilma Jamitza Medina, who was taken into custody on Wednesday. She faces one count of capital murder of a person under 10 years old in the death of her son, David Ogbevbon Ehanire-Medina. She is currently being held in the Bexar County Jail on a $600,000 bond.
The Disturbing Discovery
Universal City police say officers responded around 5 a.m. on September 3 to a home on Zodiac Drive after a call for help. Inside, they found David suffering from multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest. Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital, but he died shortly after arrival.
Detective Sergeant David Faust described the scene as devastating, saying even seasoned first responders were shaken by what they found.
The Father’s Attempt to Save His Son
Court records reveal that David’s father — an officer with the China Grove Police Department — had just returned home from a night shift when he heard his son scream. After forcing open the locked bedroom door, he discovered Medina holding their son’s lifeless body with one arm and a bloody knife in the other.
The father wrestled with Medina, at one point grabbing her by the legs to keep her from reaching the boy again. Police later found Medina covered in blood.
Medina’s Behavior and Statements
According to police, Medina stabbed herself during the struggle, yelling, “I cannot live without him” and “let me die.” She also allegedly told her husband, “This is what you want.”
After being hospitalized, Medina told investigators she believed people were “following” her and trying to enter the home. She also claimed her son was being harmed at school and said, “There’s no going back.”
In a later call with relatives, she reportedly expressed shame, calling herself “trash” in Spanish.
Community Shock
Police Chief Johnny Siemens called the killing “a crime that shocks your conscience and rocks you to your core,” adding that such a tragedy leaves scars on everyone involved, especially first responders.
The brutal death of 9-year-old David Ogbevbon Ehanire-Medina has left a family and community in grief. While the legal process moves forward, questions remain about Medina’s mental state and what led to the horrific act. She awaits her next court appearance as investigators continue to gather evidence in the case.
