DALLAS, Texas – North Texans are bracing for dangerous air quality and extreme heat on Thursday, with temperatures pushing towards 101°F across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. An official Ozone Action Day is in effect, urging residents to take extra precautions to protect themselves from both the heat and poor air quality.

Ozone Action Day & Heat Advisory

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has warned that ozone pollution will spike under hot, stagnant conditions. To help reduce harmful emissions, drivers and commuters are encouraged to limit driving, carpool, or use public transportation.

Additionally, keeping vehicles well-maintained, avoiding idling, and postponing outdoor tasks like mowing are effective steps residents can take to minimize ozone levels.

As the National Weather Service reports, temperatures will soar into the low 100s, with the heat index making it feel even hotter. Residents of Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington are advised to stay hydrated and avoid extended outdoor activities, particularly in the afternoon hours.

Late Friday: Storms and Traffic Hazards

While storm chances will return late Friday, bringing scattered showers along I-35 and through Tarrant and Dallas counties, the thunderstorms may offer some relief from the oppressive heat. However, these storms could lead to brief downpours and gusty winds, creating potential traffic hazards for the Friday evening commute.

Weekend Outlook

Weather conditions will slightly improve over the weekend, with highs dropping to the low to mid-80s and rain chances increasing through Sunday. Drivers are advised to remain cautious on slick roads during the showers and to allow extra travel time.

The ozone alert remains in effect through Thursday, and further advisories may be issued as weather conditions evolve over the weekend.
