August 29, 2025 – AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has announced that applications for the annual Alligator Gar Harvest Authorization drawing will open on September 1. This system allows selected anglers to harvest one alligator gar over 48 inches from a designated section of the Trinity River.
How to Apply
From September 1–30, licensed anglers can apply:
Through the Texas Hunt & Fish mobile app
Online at the TPWD website
As individuals or in small groups
Winners will be chosen through a random drawing and notified by October 15. Authorizations are valid from the date issued until August 31, 2026.
Authorized Fishing Area
Anglers who win the drawing can fish day or night using any legal method within this section of the Trinity River:
From I-30 bridge in Dallas downstream to the I-10 bridge in Chambers County
Includes Lake Livingston and the East Fork of the Trinity River upstream to the Lake Ray Hubbard dam
Affected counties include Dallas, Chambers, Liberty, Trinity, Polk, Walker, Houston, Leon, Navarro, Kaufman, Madison, Ellis, Anderson, Henderson, San Jacinto, and Freestone.
Importance of the Program
“Fishing for alligator gar on the Trinity River is world renowned and truly a bucket list item for any angler,” said Tim Birdsong, TPWD Inland Fisheries Director. He added that the drawing gives 150 anglers a chance to catch the fish of a lifetime while helping conserve this unique species.
Reporting Requirements
All harvested alligator gar must be reported within 24 hours through the Texas Hunt & Fish app or online (except Falcon International Reservoir). This data helps TPWD track gar populations and ensure long-term sustainability.
Other Regulations Still in Effect
48-inch maximum length limit for alligator gar in the same section of the Trinity River.
Nighttime archery and crossbow ban from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise (unless using a valid harvest authorization).
One-fish-per-day limit statewide, except Falcon International Reservoir, where the bag limit is five and possession limit is 10.
The Alligator Gar Harvest Authorization drawing offers anglers a rare chance to harvest one of Texas’ most iconic freshwater fish while also supporting conservation goals. With strict rules and reporting requirements, TPWD ensures that this unique species continues to thrive for generations of Texans to enjoy.
