The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released its schedule for this month’s retirement payments, which are distributed on different Wednesdays depending on the beneficiary’s date of birth. This system helps the agency manage the millions of payments made each month.
New Rule on Overpayments
Recently, the SSA introduced a measure allowing it to withhold up to 50% of monthly benefits from retirees who were previously overpaid and have not yet returned the excess funds.
This means that while many seniors will receive their full benefit on their scheduled date, some may notice their checks are reduced as the agency recovers past overpayments.
Who Gets Paid on Wednesday, September 27?
According to the SSA’s payment calendar, retirees born between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive their Social Security payment on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.
How the Payment Schedule Works
Social Security retirement payments are divided across the month based on the beneficiary’s date of birth:
Born between the 1st and 10th: Paid on the second Wednesday of the month.
Born between the 11th and 20th: Paid on the third Wednesday of the month.
Born between the 21st and 31st: Paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
This schedule does not apply to everyone. Some people — including those who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or those also receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) — may follow a different payment calendar.
On Wednesday, September 27, Social Security retirement benefits will go out to people born between the 21st and 31st of any month. However, retirees who owe money to SSA due to overpayments may receive reduced checks, with up to half their monthly benefit withheld.
