A Florida woman has been arrested after police say she shot her 75-year-old father multiple times outside his home following a brief argument.
Daughter Charged with First-Degree Murder
Leah Verona Scott, 43, was charged with first-degree murder after allegedly gunning down her father, Leroy Scott, in front of his West Palm Beach home. Police tracked her down within hours of the shooting, which took place around 8:22 a.m. on Tuesday.
Confrontation Turns Deadly
According to the arrest affidavit, Leah Scott was driving through her father’s neighborhood on her way to visit relatives when she saw him working in his driveway. She got out of her car to confront him.
When Leroy told her to “Get out of my face” and walked away, Leah allegedly pulled a handgun from her waistband and shot him in the back. Police say she then fired three more shots before leaving in her Saturn Vue.
Incident Caught on Camera
The shooting was captured on nearby residential security cameras as well as surveillance footage from Bak Middle School, located just 50 feet away and in session at the time. Leroy Scott died at the scene despite life-saving attempts.
Police Confession
Leah was quickly located and confessed to the crime, telling officers she wanted her father to “stop bothering her.” She admitted she had planned to shoot herself afterward but changed her mind, saying it “was not right.” She also claimed she got rid of the gun.
Teacher at Local School
At the time of the incident, Leah Scott worked as a teacher at JFK Middle School. Following her arrest, school officials confirmed she would no longer be allowed on campus or have any contact with students.
Court Appearance and Charges
Leah Scott appeared in court on Wednesday and was denied bond. Along with the murder charge, she was also charged with exhibiting weapons on school property, since the shooting happened so close to Bak Middle School.
Her attorney, Scott Skier, urged against drawing conclusions too quickly, saying:
“I think that with time, facts will emerge that explain the circumstances and perhaps avail a defense to this.”
Her next court date is scheduled for September 25.
