Bradenton, FL — A Florida man is facing serious charges after allegedly stabbing his brother’s girlfriend in a violent and prolonged attack that only stopped when his brother shot him in self-defense, according to Manatee County authorities.

Brutal Stabbing Incident

Dakota Michael Hayes, 21, is charged with attempted murder in the first degree and aggravated assault with a knife. The incident took place earlier this month at the Hayes residence in Bradenton, when an escalating conflict led to the violent assault.

Timeline of Events Leading to Attack

According to a criminal complaint, the violence unfolded over the course of two days, beginning on Aug. 11. Hayes allegedly threatened to kill his brother’s girlfriend multiple times after becoming upset with her for washing a dish in the sink.

The woman, fearing for her safety, claimed that Hayes had been obsessing over her for years and that his behavior was escalating.

The following morning, on Aug. 12, Hayes allegedly broke into the woman’s bedroom, punched her in the face, and then repeatedly stabbed her with a knife.

The victim’s boyfriend, Hayes’ brother, intervened to stop the assault, but Hayes reportedly attempted to continue attacking the woman. In response, the brother retrieved a firearm and shot Hayes to stop him.

Victims’ Injuries and Hospitalization

Both the victim and Hayes were rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The woman suffered at least 11 stab wounds to her head, neck, and abdomen, requiring the removal of part of her intestine. Hayes sustained two gunshot wounds, one to his left arm and another to his right hip and buttocks.

Witnesses Report Disturbing Behavior

Witnesses told authorities that Hayes had been exhibiting erratic behavior in recent weeks. They described him as having “episodes” but said this was the first instance of him becoming physically violent.

Legal Proceedings and Detainment

Dakota Hayes is currently being held in the Manatee County Jail without bond. A competency hearing is scheduled for September 25, and his arraignment is set for October 3.
