Virginia Beach and nearby coastal areas are under alert as a stalled weather system continues to bring flooding risks and rough surf through the weekend. Low-lying roads are already facing waterlogging, and conditions are expected to worsen during evening high tides.
Coastal Flood Warning in Effect
The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Coastal Flood Warning until Sunday night for Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and nearby shoreline communities.
Along with this, a High Surf Advisory remains in place as large waves and rip currents make swimming unsafe at Oceanfront and First Landing State Park beaches.
Roads and Neighborhoods at Risk
Flooding is expected in low-lying areas, especially along:
Shore Drive
Sandbridge
U.S. Route 60
Drivers are strongly advised to avoid water-covered roads, as even shallow flooding can stall vehicles and create dangerous conditions.
Showers and Thunderstorms Possible
Scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop Sunday and Monday afternoons. While rainfall totals are expected to be less than a quarter-inch, even this small amount can worsen flooding in already vulnerable neighborhoods. Stronger storms may also bring down tree limbs, but major power outages are not expected.
Conditions to Improve Early Next Week
The risk of flooding and dangerous surf will slowly ease by late Monday. However, if tides remain higher than normal, additional warnings and advisories may still be issued.
