A tragic case of suspected murder and flight unfolded as Sheylla Cabrera, 33, was reported missing on August 12. Investigators believe her husband, 36-year-old Jossimar Cabrera, killed her days before and disposed of her body in a national forest before fleeing to Peru with their three young children.
Surveillance Footage Leads to Suspected Foul Play
Surveillance footage from the Cabrera family’s apartment complex in Lancaster, California, captured Jossimar Cabrera dragging a large object wrapped in material on August 10.
Authorities suspected foul play and began investigating the disappearance. When they arrived at the apartment to question him, Jossimar and their three children, ages 9, 6, and 4, were gone.
Search Efforts Lead to Discovery of Body
On August 13, investigators launched a search in the Angeles National Forest, based on additional evidence. Three days later, a search team discovered a body wrapped in material, matching the object seen in the footage.
Sheylla Cabrera’s body was found at the base of an embankment and was pronounced dead at the scene. The official cause of death is pending an investigation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
Children Found Safe in Peru
As the investigation continued, Peruvian authorities reported that the three Cabrera children had been found and placed into protective custody. Despite this, Jossimar Cabrera remains free, with Peruvian authorities initially detaining him but later releasing him.
Domestic Violence History and Changing Stories
Sheylla’s mother revealed that Sheylla had reported her husband for domestic violence in Peru and was planning to file a report in California.
Jossimar Cabrera has reportedly changed his story several times regarding his wife’s disappearance, first claiming she was taken by ICE, then suggesting she left with another man, and later saying she had an accident.
Legal Process and Pending Charges
The case has now been referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review, with prosecutors considering filing murder charges against Jossimar Cabrera. He is currently believed to be in Peru, where further investigation is required to bring him back to the U.S. for justice.
