Three young children in Texas helped authorities uncover the tragic aftermath of a murder-suicide when they approached neighbors asking for food and revealed that their parents were dead inside their apartment.
The children, ages 1, 2, and 3, had reportedly been left alone for at least 24 hours after the shooting deaths, according to Houston police.
Children Discover Parents’ Bodies After Being Left Alone
The heartbreaking incident unfolded at an apartment complex on Meadowglen Lane in Houston, where the children approached neighbors in the parking lot, asking for food.
Upon speaking with the children, police learned that the parents—both 26 years old—were found dead inside their apartment. Authorities responded to the scene around 4:15 p.m. on Monday, where they discovered the parents’ bodies.
Police Investigating Murder-Suicide Theory
Preliminary investigations suggest that the father may have shot the mother, and homicide detectives are working to confirm whether the deaths were indeed the result of a murder-suicide.
Authorities have not released the names of the deceased, and as of Tuesday, they were still investigating the case to ensure no further danger to the community.
Children Taken into Care
The children were found unharmed but dehydrated and hungry, according to police. Neighbors reported that the kids had been outside for several hours in the heat before being approached.
The children are now in the care of their grandmother, as confirmed by police. One neighbor, Deborah McMillan, shared her concern for the children, particularly the oldest, who had vivid details of the tragic event.
Domestic Violence Concerns Raised by Neighbors
McMillan also mentioned that she had been aware of domestic violence occurring in the apartment across from hers. She recalled the mother coming to her home a few times to ask for help, explaining that she was hesitant to leave the abusive situation because of the children.
“Her main thing is that she didn’t want to leave because of the kids,” McMillan said. This tragic case has raised further concerns about domestic violence and the safety of the children, who are now receiving the care they need after witnessing such a traumatic event.
