August 2025 Brings Two SSI Payments, But It’s Not Additional Money

Millions of Americans eagerly marked August 1st and August 29th on their calendars, as these dates are key deposit days for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients across the country.

With both payments landing in the same month, September 2025 will have no SSI payments, creating a curious situation for those on the program.

Why Two SSI Payments in August?

SSI payments are typically delivered like clockwork on the 1st of each month. However, when the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) shifts the payment to the last business day of the previous month.

In 2025, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 1st, which is a federal holiday. This triggers a shift:

August 1st: The regular August payment arrives as scheduled.

August 29th: The payment intended for September 1st is deposited early to avoid the holiday closure.

As a result, recipients will receive two payments in August—one for August and one for September—leaving September without an SSI payment.

SSI Benefit Amounts for 2025

In 2025, SSI payments will see a slight increase due to the 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA):

$967 per month for eligible individuals (up from $943 in 2024).

$1,450 per month for eligible couples (up from $1,415 in 2024).

These amounts will apply to both the August 1st and August 29th payments. However, it’s important to note that the August 29th payment is not “extra” money—it is simply an advance of September’s payment.

Social Security Retirement Payments in August

For those receiving both SSI and Social Security retirement payments, the retirement payments follow a separate schedule. If you haven’t received your August retirement deposit yet, here are the upcoming dates:

August 20th: For those with birthdates between 11th-20th.

August 27th: For those with birthdates between 21st-31st.

The maximum Social Security retirement benefit in 2025 is $5,108, but this is reserved for individuals with high lifetime earnings who delay their retirement until age 70.

What This Means for SSI Recipients

While the early September payment on August 29th may feel like a bonus, recipients should remember that it’s just a pre-payment for September. They’ll have to manage their funds carefully through the long month of September, which will have no SSI payment.
