Man Returns to Bar with Machete and Brass Knuckles, Tries to Kill Patron Who Had Him Kicked Out, Police Say

A 39-year-old man from North Carolina, Matthew King, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and several assault charges following a violent altercation at The Public House in Uptown Charlotte on the morning of August 9.

Police say King was kicked out of the bar after a verbal altercation turned physical, only to return 30 minutes later armed with a machete and brass knuckles.

Attack Details

According to the arrest affidavit, King approached the victim from behind and allegedly said, “Remember me?” before attempting to strike the man with brass knuckles. King then swung the machete towards the victim’s head.

The victim was able to partially block the blows, resulting in a large laceration on his hand. The victim was later transported to a local hospital for surgery.

Disarming the Suspect

Several witnesses intervened and were able to overpower King, taking him to the ground and disarming him. Another man who helped disarm King suffered a minor laceration to his thigh.

Arrest and Investigation

When police arrived, they found King covered in blood, with the machete and brass knuckles still on him. Witnesses at the scene provided statements that supported the victims’ version of events. King was treated for his injuries before being arrested and booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail.

Charges and Court Date

Matthew King faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. His next court appearance is pending.
