Saline County, KS — Kayla Errebo, 32, has been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and reckless driving after allegedly causing a fatal crash that resulted in the death of Deanna June Sommerfeld, 55, and serious injury to her husband.
The crash occurred early on Friday morning when Errebo crossed the center line on State Road 140 in Saline County and collided head-on with Sommerfeld’s vehicle.
Probation Violation and Drunk Driving
Errebo was on probation for a previous DUI conviction and fleeing police when the incident occurred. Court records show that she was arrested for DUI in January 2024 and again in June 2024, leading to a one-year probation sentence, set to end in November 2025.
The terms of her probation included strict requirements: she was not to drink alcohol, avoid bars, and only drive vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device.
However, authorities say she violated all these terms. Errebo reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol at a bar on Thursday night before getting behind the wheel of a car that lacked the required ignition interlock device. This device prevents a vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected in the driver’s breath.
The Tragic Crash
The crash took place in Saline County on State Road 140 when Errebo allegedly crossed into the opposite lane, striking Sommerfeld’s vehicle head-on.
Sommerfeld, a 55-year-old mother, was tragically killed, and her husband sustained serious injuries. Sommerfeld’s friends described her as kind-hearted and always ready to help others, highlighting the profound loss to her family and community.
Community Impact and Legal Consequences
Sommerfeld leaves behind a husband and two sons, as well as a community of friends who mourn her loss. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her family during this tragic time.
Friends of Sommerfeld are speaking out, urging others to remember the dangers of drunk driving. One of her friends stated, “Never get behind the wheel while you’re drinking. Unfortunately, this person hasn’t learned that lesson, and it cost the life of our good friend.”
Kayla Errebo remains in Saline County Jail with a $1 million bond. She faces more than 40 years in prison if convicted. Her next court appearance is scheduled for August 22, 2025.
This case serves as another sobering reminder of the deadly consequences of drunk driving and the importance of following probationary conditions.
The tragic loss of Deanna Sommerfeld and the serious injuries suffered by her husband will forever affect their loved ones, while Errebo’s disregard for the law will likely lead to a lengthy prison sentence.
