Kennett Township, PA — Javier Rivera, 33, of Pennsylvania, has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing a man to death during an attempted car theft.

The tragic incident took place Sunday night into early Monday morning, sparking a crime spree that ended with Rivera’s capture at his home.

The Crime Unfolds: A Deadly Car Theft

According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, Rivera attempted to steal a BMW from the driveway of a home in Kennett Township. The 69-year-old homeowner became aware of the theft in progress and confronted Rivera, chasing him up the driveway.

During the altercation, Rivera allegedly stabbed the victim in the torso and neck, causing his death. Rivera then fled the scene, leading to a series of car thefts as he tried to evade capture.

Escalating Crime Spree

After the murder, Rivera’s crime spree continued. At one point, he crashed into a gray Honda Accord and, when the other drivers exited their car to exchange insurance information, he stole their vehicle.

He went on to steal multiple cars and eventually drove to West Chester, about 25 minutes north of Kennett Township, where he broke into a home on New Street. He was confronted by two residents but continued his escape.

Capture and Arrest

Rivera’s spree ended when he returned to his home in Kennett Square in a stolen Honda CRV. Police found him at the residence, still wearing the same clothes described by witnesses. Authorities noted that Rivera had a laceration on his right palm and his clothing showed signs of dried blood.

He was arrested on Monday by Chester County detectives and booked into the Chester County Correctional Complex. Rivera was arraigned the same day and is set to appear for a preliminary hearing on August 20.

Community Reactions

Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe expressed his shock at the violence, calling it a “senseless” act that shattered the peace of the community. He praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies, which collaborated to quickly identify and apprehend Rivera, preventing further harm.

Kennett Township Police Chief Matthew Gordon also expressed his outrage, stating that the stabbing was a senseless act and that there was no reason for the attack. The investigation involved at least six agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police.

The tragic events in Kennett Township serve as a grim reminder of how quickly a routine car theft can spiral into a violent crime spree. Rivera now faces numerous serious charges as law enforcement works to ensure justice for the victim and the community.
