A 14-year-old boy from Florida is in custody after allegedly shooting and killing his parents in the middle of the night, then walking over a mile to a church where he called 911 and confessed his actions.
Trevor Lee of Clay County is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection to the deaths of his mother, Brandi Smith, 45, and father, David Lee, 44, early on Monday at their home in Middleburg, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
The Tragic Incident
The tragic events unfolded early Monday morning when Trevor Lee allegedly shot both of his parents inside their home. Afterward, he walked approximately 1.4 miles to Cross Pointe Church on Fleming Island.
At around 3:48 a.m., Lee called 911, telling the dispatcher, “I killed my parents,” and asked her to pray for him. The dispatcher responded, saying, “I’ll definitely be praying for you, son.”
“I was gonna ask if you could pray for me, ma’am,” Lee reportedly told the dispatcher.
911 Call and Confession
The 911 call was released by Clay County officials, along with Lee’s mugshot and arrest report. During the call, Lee is heard waiting at the church for police to arrive. The dispatcher calmly advised him to take a deep breath and listen for the officers’ arrival, while Lee responded, “Yes, ma’am.”
After officers arrived at the church, Lee was taken into custody without incident and later admitted to the police that he had murdered his parents inside their home in Fleming Island.
Family and Prior Events
A 911 call from Lee’s aunt, who is the sister of David Lee, revealed some details about the family’s last day together. The aunt told dispatch that the couple had spent the previous day together, going to the movies, and described the incident as the culmination of a domestic argument between Trevor and his parents.
Mental Health Concerns and Family History
Authorities are reportedly investigating Trevor Lee’s mental health history, as his mother, Brandi Smith, had posted on social media back in 2019 about the struggles she faced with him. In the post, she wrote, “This lil boy gives me pure hell. Everything I did to my parents I’m getting it back times 10. Y’all keep us lifted up in prayer.”
Police Response and Investigation
Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook stated that the shooting followed a domestic argument, and the investigation is ongoing. “It appears there was some sort of domestic argument,” Sheriff Cook said during a press conference.
The incident has left the local community in shock, with many struggling to understand how a teenager could commit such a tragic act. Authorities continue to examine all aspects of the case, including the teen’s mental health and family dynamics.
As the investigation continues, Trevor Lee remains in custody, facing serious charges for the deaths of his parents. The case has raised important questions about mental health, family dynamics, and the tragic events that led to the death of Brandi Smith and David Lee.
