A Harris County grand jury has indicted 26-year-old Manuel Trevino of Houston on charges of Delivery of a Controlled Substance in connection with the fentanyl overdose death of a 17-year-old girl in 2023.
The indictment follows an investigation by the Friendswood Police Department after the teen was found unresponsive at a home in the 5100 block of Shady Oaks Lane.
Investigation and Findings
On August 18, 2023, the Friendswood Police Department responded to the scene where medical personnel confirmed the teen’s death. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that the cause of death was the toxic combination of multiple substances, including fentanyl.
Investigators traced the supply of fentanyl to Trevino, leading to his indictment by a grand jury on July 18, 2025. Trevino’s bond was set at $5,000, and he is currently being held in the Harris County Jail.
Impact of Recent Legislation
The indictment comes just weeks after the passing of House Bill 6 by the Texas Legislature on September 1, 2023. The bill allows individuals who manufacture or deliver fentanyl that results in death to face murder charges. The law underscores the increasing focus on tackling fentanyl-related deaths in the state.
The tragic death of the 17-year-old girl highlights the dangers of fentanyl, a powerful drug that has been a growing concern across the country.
With the new legislation, authorities in Texas are taking a stronger stance on prosecuting those involved in the distribution of such substances, aiming to reduce the impact of fentanyl on communities.
