A tourist from England is facing serious charges after allegedly attempting to drown his daughter-in-law during a heated argument over his will while vacationing in Florida.

The incident occurred at the Solterra Resort in Davenport, located near Walt Disney World, on Sunday afternoon. The quick actions of neighbors and a 9-year-old girl helped prevent a tragedy and led to the suspect’s arrest.

The Argument that Led to Violence

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the altercation took place around 5:19 p.m. in the resort’s backyard swimming pool.

Mark Raymond Gibbon, 62, from Beaconsfield, England, was reportedly arguing with his 33-year-old daughter-in-law about the details of his will. The disagreement quickly escalated into physical violence when Gibbon allegedly began shoving her underwater.

Victim’s Struggle to Escape

The victim described how Gibbon repeatedly pushed her under the water, ignoring her desperate pleas for air. She was reportedly unable to breathe and feared she was about to drown.

Despite her efforts to break free, Gibbon continued his attack, holding her underwater multiple times. The victim’s 9-year-old daughter witnessed the scene and jumped into the pool to protect her mother. She tried to stop her grandfather but was allegedly shoved away by him.

Neighbors to the Rescue

In a desperate attempt to escape, the victim shouted for help, catching the attention of nearby neighbors. They immediately called 911, prompting Gibbon to stop his actions.

Deputies arrived soon after and arrested Gibbon, who allegedly confessed to the incident but claimed he did not intend to drown his daughter-in-law. Gibbon stated that the fight began after a disagreement over the will, during which the victim reportedly slapped him.

Gibbon’s Arrest and Charges

Gibbon was arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder and battery. He remains in the Polk County Jail without bond. The victim suffered minor injuries, including scratches. Gibbon’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 9.

A Disturbing Incident on Vacation

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd commented on the shocking incident, emphasizing that while Florida welcomes visitors from all over the world, the state expects vacationers to behave responsibly.

He added, “Because Mr. Gibbon couldn’t control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.”

This disturbing case serves as a reminder of the unexpected violence that can occur even in what are supposed to be peaceful vacation settings.

The quick thinking of the victim’s daughter and neighbors played a crucial role in preventing further harm, but the incident has left a lasting impact on the family. As the legal process moves forward, Gibbon will face serious consequences for his actions.
