A couple in Tennessee has been arrested after police found their seven young children living in extremely poor and unsafe conditions. The parents, Jason and Amber Hoffer, are now facing serious charges related to child abuse and neglect.
How the Investigation Started
The case came to light early Tuesday morning when the Knox County Sheriff’s Office got a call about two small children found alone in a wooded area near their home on Clear Springs Road in Mascot, just outside Knoxville.
When police arrived, they located the children’s home and discovered that seven kids, aged from just 1 month to 7 years, were living there. The parents, Jason Hoffer (27) and Amber Hoffer (28), were at the house when officers visited.
What Police Discovered Inside the House
According to police reports, the inside of the house was in horrible condition. Trash was all over the floor, and there were human feces smeared on the walls and even the sink. Officers described the home as “deplorable and uninhabitable,” meaning it was in no condition for anyone, especially children, to live in.
One of the children found in the woods had serious bruises on his leg, and both children told police they were very hungry and hadn’t eaten in a long time.
Shocking Allegations of Abuse
As the investigation continued, the situation became even more disturbing. One of the children told investigators that his father would lock him inside a dog cage in the living room when he misbehaved.
He also claimed that his dad, Jason Hoffer, would beat him with a metal pole while he was locked in the cage, leaving painful welts on his body.
Police confirmed finding the cage in the house. There were no pets in the home, leading officers to believe it was only used to punish the child.
The child managed to escape from the home, which led to the discovery of the entire situation.
Legal Action and Child Protection
Jason Hoffer has been charged with aggravated child abuse and child endangerment and is currently in jail with a bond set at $55,000. His wife, Amber Hoffer, is also facing a charge of child endangerment and has been released on bond.
The Department of Children’s Services has stepped in and removed all seven children from the home. They are now being cared for by the state.
